CMA Program Enjoys Record Year

The CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) program posted another record year in fiscal 2013, breaking last year’s record for the number of certificates awarded and setting a new benchmark for the number of professionals enrolled in the program.

ICMA® awarded exactly 2,800 CMA certificates in fiscal 2013, which ended on June 30, 2013, compared to 2,360 in the prior fiscal year—an increase of nearly 20%.

Looking at these trends along geographic lines, the number of new CMAs from the Asia/Pacific region climbed by more than 80%, rising from 678 in fiscal 2012 to 1,232 in fiscal 2013. In the Middle East, new CMAs decreased slightly, from 628 last year to 522 this year. In the U.S., ICMA awarded 872 new CMA certificates in fiscal 2013, compared to 878 in fiscal 2012. Europe still accounts for a small, but growing, market: 174 new CMAs hail from Europe this fiscal year, compared to 170 last year. Active CMAs are now more than 20,500—an all-time high.

Also enjoying strong growth is the number of CMA candidates – that is, those enrolled in the program but who have not yet passed the exam. At the conclusion of fiscal 2013, approximately 19,000 professionals were enrolled in the CMA program. In addition, the number of new candidates who joined the CMA program this fiscal year totaled 11,218—the second-highest ever.

Commenting on these achievements, Dennis A. Whitney, CMA, ICMA senior vice president of certifications, exams, and content integration, said, “The CMA program continues to gain recognition around the world as a valued credential for accounting and finance professionals working inside organizations. The strong demand for the certification confirms the relevance of the exam content and its alignment with the work that accounting and finance teams do on a daily basis."

“Further, the strong overseas growth of the program validates the investment that IMA
® has made in these markets, where there exists a large unmet demand for qualified management accountants. We look forward to continuing to extend our reach into these geographic regions and to doing our part to address the need for appropriately trained accounting and finance professionals around the world.”
